THE BACKDROP.
Over the last decade, we know the challenges facing young people have increased exponentially, whilst public services have retreated and youth services have been decimated.
It will take innovative approaches, creative partnerships and genuine collaborations to halt decline and create a hopeful future.
Our approach includes consolidating, and building on what works, but also evolving through our #GameChangers framework that encompasses service gaps, emerging issues and opportunities to fulfil the potential of young people and shape the future of East Birmingham.

OUR PATCH.
Birmingham is a young City, and East Birmingham is even more youthful with approximately 50% of the population under 30 years of age.
Birmingham is known for its diverse population. East Birmingham, in particular, has an even higher proportion of ethnic minorities compared to the city as a whole. The area is characterised by a significant Asian population, especially Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities.
We already know that around 43% of Birmingham’s population lives in the 10% most deprived areas in England. This makes Birmingham one of the most deprived cities in the country, ranking 7th nationally. Unfortunately, East Birmingham suffers a double-whammy, consistently featuring as the most deprived part of an already deprived City.
THE CHALLENGE.
The scale of the challenge is not to be underestimated.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT
More than one in five young people in Birmingham are out of work. The pandemic has disrupted education and employment pathways, making it tough for young people to find jobs.
TRANSPORT
Some young individuals endure long journeys to college or find it difficult to access employment opportunities due to costs and inadequate infrastructure.
DEPRIVATION CHALLENGES
Many young people & their families experience overcrowding and homelessness, they come from low income/unemployed households, experience school exclusions, involvement with the care system & structural racism.
MENTAL WELLBEING
Young people experience persistent challenges related to issues such as stress, anxiety and depression. Many young people encounter difficulties accessing mental health support and services.
OBESITY AND INACTIVITY
Young people are struggling to maintain a healthy weight and staying active. This leads to well-known and longer-term health conditions.
CRIME AND ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
The cumulative effect of adverse life experiences and lack of hope means that many young people are at risk of drugs and substance abuse, gang culture and falling into criminality.
THE OPPORTUNITY.
We refuse to be defined by deprivation, and what is wrong. Instead, we will:
Nurture and unleash talent. We will focus on what is strong and not just things that are broken.
Challenge inertia and the organisational status quo… agencies doing the same things and expecting different outcomes.
Be dynamic and adaptive. We will get things done. We will learn lessons and go again.
