Living Well: Prioritising Health and Wellbeing for Young People in East Birmingham.

At Our Community Foundation, we understand that good health is the foundation for a bright future. The pressures on the NHS are greater than ever, but we believe in addressing health issues upstream — before they become crises. Through our Living Well pillar, we are working with local NHS services, Public Health, and Social Care to engage young people early, providing proactive support that focuses on prevention and addresses health inequalities.

We know that physical and mental health are crucial to a young person’s ability to thrive, and that’s why we’re taking a comprehensive approach. Our Living Well pillar prioritises improving physical health by consolidating our existing sports and engagement initiatives. These initiatives provide young people with the opportunity to stay active, build fitness, and develop healthy habits that will benefit them for years to come. Through a wide range of sports activities, health and wellbeing initiatives and events, we are engaging 300 young people annually in physical activity — creating not only healthier individuals but a sense of community and belonging.

But physical health is only part of the picture. As mental health challenges continue to rise among young people, we are committed to ensuring that mental wellbeing is just as high a priority. We are building new relationships with mental health services to support young people in accessing the help they need when they need it most. Whether through one-on-one support, group workshops, or direct referrals, our programme supports upto 150 young people annually to access mental health services, ensuring that mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.

Through the Living Well pillar, we are breaking down the barriers that often prevent young people from accessing healthcare and wellbeing services. By building strong partnerships with local services and focusing on early intervention, we’re ensuring that young people have the support they need to thrive both mentally and physically.

The impact of this programme goes beyond just the numbers. It’s about creating a culture of wellbeing where young people are empowered to take care of their health, where mental health isn’t stigmatised but openly supported, and where communities are strengthened through healthier, more resilient individuals.

As we continue to work with local partners, we are committed to expanding the Living Well programme and reaching more young people every year. Together, we can build a healthier future — one where young people have access to the resources they need to live well, both physically and mentally.
