Despite grey skies and unpredictable weather in August, more than 2,000 people turned out in force to celebrate youth voice, community spirit, and sporting excellence at our annual youth-led event, proudly supported by the National Lottery Fund and the Henry Smith Foundation.
As ever, our annual youth-led event was entirely planned, developed, and hosted by 25 young people aged 11–25 not only delivered an unforgettable day of activities but also demonstrated the power of youth leadership in action.
A Celebration of Youth Power
From the earliest planning meetings to the final moments of the event which took over 6 months, young people led the way. Their creativity, organisational skills, and sheer determination turned an ambitious vision into reality. As one young participant put it:
“It was a great event, everyone loved it!”
Another added:
“The event was well received and definitely a core memory.”
These reflections capture the essence of the day—an event designed for the community, by the community’s young leaders, and enjoyed by families of all ages.
Sporting Highlights: Blind Football & Kabaddi
Sport was at the heart of the event. Attendees were treated to a vibrant mix of activities, with something for everyone. A particular highlight was the introduction of Blind Football, brought by Birmingham City FC Foundation, alongside Kabaddi, delivered by England Kabaddi—two experiences that brought new energy and inclusivity to the day.
Paul from Birmingham City FC Foundation, who led Blind Football, reflected warmly on the experience:
“I really enjoyed working at your event on Saturday. I met some lovely people who showed genuine interest in what we do at Birmingham City FC Foundation. We met a mother and her two children, both of whom have disabilities and are interested in trying football. Without your event, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet them, and they might not have had the chance to get involved in football so thank you for making that possible.”
These words reinforced the value of bringing innovative, inclusive sports to new audiences and the way such activities break down barriers in our communities.
Dignitaries and Leaders in Attendance
We were honored to welcome Cllr Mariam Khan (Cabinet Member for Health), who attended with her children and stayed for the entire day, immersing herself fully in the activities and showing her deep support for youth-led initiatives. She reflected on the on the importance of amplifying youth voice—particularly in communities such as Alum Rock.
The Lord Mayor of Birmingham also joined us and expressed his admiration for the confidence, passion, and leadership shown by the young people who made the event possible, describing it as a model for how youth can shape the future of our city.
Young People’s Voices
What made the event truly unique were the voices of the young people themselves. Here are just some of their reflections:

These comments highlight the dual power of the event: not only providing a vibrant, fun-filled day for the community but also giving young people valuable learning, growth, and even entrepreneurial opportunities.
Community Spirit in Full Force
The energy throughout the day was electric, with families joining in sports activities, exploring youth-led stalls, and enjoying a welcoming space that celebrated diversity, creativity, and community.
Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, it didn’t dampen spirits. Instead, it reinforced the strength of the community’s commitment to supporting young people and celebrating their achievements.
Looking Ahead
This year’s youth-led event proved once again that when young people are given the chance to lead, they rise to the occasion with confidence and creativity. The event was more than a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of what youth power can achieve when supported and trusted.
As one participant summed it up beautifully:
“Overall, the event was a brilliant opportunity and a good social event!”
