More Than Just Steering a Boat: How Sailing Transformed the Lives of Young People in East Birmingham.
Between 2011 and 2014, Our Community Foundation partnered with the Cirdan Sailing Trust to deliver a life-changing series of sailing excursions for over 50 disadvantaged young people from East Birmingham. Onboard the Queen Galadriel, these young people didn’t just observe — they led.
They made the ropes, pulled the flag, navigated open waters across the English Channel, cooked their meals, climbed the rigging, and slept below deck. Every day was a challenge, and every challenge became a lesson in resilience, teamwork, and independence.
As 14-year-old Kiaro reflected after his trip:
“Sailing was amazing — there’s more to it than just steering a boat.”
For many of these young people, this was their first time outside Birmingham — let alone the UK. The Queen Galadriel became a floating classroom where learning didn’t come from textbooks, but from tide charts, tight knots, and team briefings.
Every moment required responsibility. Whether cleaning their cabins, taking night shifts at the helm, or preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner for all, young people were treated not as passengers, but as co-sailors. They rose to the occasion.
Why It Matters
In areas like East Birmingham, many young people grow up facing multiple challenges — poverty, limited access to opportunities, and exposure to crime or poor mental health. These experiences at sea offered something different:
Self-discipline through structure and routine.
Confidence built from hands-on leadership.
Teamwork fostered by a shared goal and tight quarters.
Perspective gained by leaving their postcode and comfort zone.
These are not just “soft skills” — they’re critical life tools. We’ve seen first-hand how these voyages sparked long-term change. Some returned more focused in school. Others began volunteering. One participant even became a youth leader in our newer programmes.
Investing in Real Impact
Our Community Foundation doesn’t offer one-off experiences for the sake of novelty. Every programme is built around a long-term theory of change. The sailing project was just one example of how we take young people out of the cycles they’re born into — and place them into spaces that stretch, grow, and empower them.
We’d like to thank the Cirdan Sailing Trust for their partnership and vision. Together, we turned the open sea into a platform for transformation.
