Confidence in Every Chain Link: How Bike Building Sparked Skills and Self – Belief in East Birmingham.
In 2018, Our Community Foundation launched a hands-on Bike Building Programme at The POD — our youth base equipped with a skate park and BMX track. Over the course of the project, young people not only built their own bikes from scratch — they learned to ride them, gained mechanical skills, and took home their creations with pride.
For many, it was their first taste of engineering and self-reliance.
As 16-year-old Usman put it:
“I built a bike for the first time — the workshops gave me the confidence to study mechanics at college.”
What We Delivered
Over 30 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds took part
Each participant built, rode, and kept their bike
Sessions were led by skilled mentors with lived experience
The POD’s skate park and BMX track provided the perfect testing ground
Skills Beyond the Workshop
These workshops weren’t just about bikes. They built:
Technical knowledge: Mechanics, tools, problem-solving
Confidence: Seeing a project through, taking pride in achievement
Focus: Many participants reported improved behaviour and attention
Progression: Several went on to explore further education in mechanics or engineering
Long-Term Impact
85% of participants reported increased self-confidence
70% said the programme helped them consider new career options
1 in 3 enrolled in follow-on courses or training after completion
Why It Matters
In an area where access to practical learning is limited, this project proved that skills-based, hands-on engagement works. It empowered young people to create something tangible — and inspired them to believe in what they could build next.
