For many young people, stepping outside of their environment is the first step toward transformation. On a recent residential trip with Our Community Foundation, a group of young participants took that step — and came back changed.
From the thrill of Drayton Manor to team-building challenges, the trip was packed with opportunities to grow. It wasn’t just about fun — it was about developing essential life skills. Whether it was problem-solving, communication, or simply learning to look after themselves while away from home, each activity was designed to build their confidence, independence, and resilience.
Throughout the trip, the message was clear: there’s a positive path forward. One focused on health, wellbeing, and personal growth — not crime or anti-social behaviour. By being part of this experience, our young people began to understand the value of making the right choices and the long-term impact those choices can have.
More than just a break from routine, this trip helped plant the seeds of ambition. Many spoke about how the experience made them more focused on their future — not just in life, but in employment. With each activity, they developed transferable skills that will one day help them stand out in interviews, workplaces, and beyond.
This is what empowerment looks like: new environments, new skills, and new levels of belief in themselves.
