At Our Community Foundation, we believe in the power of representation. When young people see someone like them achieving great things, it sparks belief — belief that they too can overcome challenges and create a better future. That’s the heart of our Real Models pillar: using digital media to spotlight local real models, amplify youth voices, and build pride within our community.
For years, we’ve used digital communications and social media to engage young people, share their achievements, and document the journeys of those who have grown up in East Birmingham and gone on to succeed. From viral videos to documentary-style storytelling, we’ve showcased the real stories of young people who have defied expectations, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
The difference between a real model and a traditional role model is critical. In areas with limited opportunity, it’s not uncommon for young people to look up to the local drug dealer — someone who seems successful, respected, and financially secure. That’s the danger of the wrong kind of visibility. The real model concept was born from our young people themselves — they wanted to see authentic, relatable examples of success grounded in purpose, integrity, and community. Real models are those who have made it without compromise, who represent hope and truth — not just status or influence.
Now, we’re taking that work to the next level. Real Models will evolve into a full-scale digital media and storytelling initiative — with plans to scale our youth-led social enterprise ‘Student Of The Game’. This will create a space for young people not only to share stories, but to learn valuable skills in content creation, production, branding, and communications. Through hands-on experience, they’ll become storytellers, marketers, and digital entrepreneurs — shaping how their community is seen and heard.
Each year, we aim to directly engage 50 young people in shaping our digital and media work, giving them ownership over the stories being told and the way their area is represented. These young people won’t just feature in our content — they’ll help produce it, lead campaigns, and build narratives that matter to them and their peers.
With a strong online presence, our goal is to reach 20,000+ annual digital engagements, using platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok to connect with young audiences and wider stakeholders. Every like, share, and view is a moment of connection — an opportunity to show that East Birmingham is full of talent, resilience, and ambition.
Real Models is more than a campaign — it’s a movement. One that champions local pride, builds digital confidence, and gives young people a voice in shaping their future. Because when young people control the narrative, they don’t just change how they’re seen — they change what’s possible.
