Inspiring the Next Generation: Sameena Ali Khan Visits Our Community Foundation
We were delighted to welcome Award-Winning TV broadcaster and author, Sameena Ali Khan, to the Naseby Youth Centre in Alum Rock, where she met with our team, youth leaders, and young people to explore the realities facing local communities today.
Sameena, one of the most respected and recognisable voices in British broadcasting, spent time listening to our young people — their hopes, challenges, and dreams for the future. For many of the girls who attended, Sameena’s story and success were deeply inspiring. She represents what we call a Real Model — someone who not only achieves greatness but also gives back, encouraging others to believe that their ambitions are within reach.
Real Models: Representation Matters
In Alum Rock and across East Birmingham, young people often tell us that they struggle to find role models who reflect their own backgrounds and experiences. Sameena’s visit helped to bridge that gap — showing that it is possible to come from this community and make a mark on the world.
Her journey resonated especially with young women who see careers in media, journalism, and broadcasting as exciting but unattainable. Through our Real Models pillar, we’re committed to changing that narrative — by connecting young people with professionals like Sameena, creating mentorship pathways, and building confidence in communication, public speaking, and storytelling.

At OCF, we believe that youth voice must be heard loud and clear. During the visit, our young leaders shared their aspirations and ideas for the future, aligning with our Youth Futures pillar — a commitment to supporting employment pathways, skill development, and opportunities in emerging industries, including media and digital communications.
Sameena’s insights into the power of communication and self-belief were invaluable, reminding our young people that every story matters, and that their voices have the power to inspire change.
Shield: Building Safer Communities
The conversation also turned to the pressing challenges facing our local area — from antisocial behaviour to youth crime. Sameena and her team were keen to understand how OCF is responding to these issues through prevention, education, and opportunity.
Our Shield pillar focuses on keeping young people safe, engaged, and supported. By providing positive outlets, mentorship, and safe spaces like Naseby Youth Centre, we are helping young people to channel their energy into personal growth and community leadership — not crime or conflict.

We also had the opportunity to share our five-year strategic framework, setting out our vision for a stronger, more connected East Birmingham. Built around our five pillars — Youth Futures, Living Well, Shield, Real Models, and Our Place — the framework captures our mission to deliver youth-led, community-driven change.
