Too many young lives have been cut short or derailed due to lack of support, resources, and safe spaces to grow. At Our Community Foundation, we’ve seen first-hand how closures of youth centres and the reduction in youth services have left a void, leading young people to turn to unhealthy alternatives. In response, our Shield pillar is dedicated to providing the safety, support, and opportunities that young people need to avoid the dangers of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Shield builds on our ongoing detached youthwork, outreach, engagement, and diversionary activities, ensuring that young people have a place to meet, discuss issues, and explore positive opportunities. Whether it’s a safe space for open conversations, a chance to engage in meaningful activities, or access to support networks, we are committed to providing young people with the tools they need to make better choices and build a positive future.
One of the core elements of Shield is our relationships with local police teams and the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). These partnerships are instrumental in securing the support and resources necessary to keep young people safe and engaged. Together, we are working to prevent young people from falling into the traps of criminal behaviour, offering them diversionary activities that steer them towards constructive, fulfilling paths.
Each year, we aim to engage 250 young people in diversionary activities. From sports and creative workshops to mentorship and community-building events, these initiatives provide young people with the guidance, support, and skills they need to stay away from harmful influences. The focus is not only on keeping young people occupied but on fostering a sense of belonging, responsibility, and empowerment — key elements in shaping a safer and more positive future.
Our goal with Shield is simple: to give young people the chance to realise their potential, without the distractions and dangers of crime or anti-social behaviour. By providing safe spaces and positive activities, we’re offering a much-needed lifeline to young people in East Birmingham, showing them that there is always an alternative path — a path filled with opportunities, growth, and hope.
As Shield grows, we are committed to increasing the number of young people we reach, continuing to build strong relationships with key partners and securing resources to support this essential work. Together, we can ensure that no young person is left behind, and no life is ruined by the lack of opportunities or a safe place to turn to.
