Where’s Our Support? East Birmingham Youth Demand Better Futures.

Where’s Our Support? is more than just a documentary—it’s a bold call to action led by 10 young people from inner-city Birmingham. Delivered by Our Community Foundation, this youth-led social action project was the flagship for the West Midlands, receiving joint funding from BBC Children in Need and the #iwill Foundation.

The project gave a platform to young people who are too often overlooked—those facing disadvantage, at risk of crime and anti-social behaviour, and left behind due to funding cuts and a lack of local youth services. These young people took full creative control: writing, filming, producing, and starring in both a trailer and a hard-hitting documentary that captures their reality and demands change.

Backed by international partners including multinational law firm Gowling WLG and Netflix-affiliated production company KOALA TV, the campaign raised the bar for youth voice and storytelling. Working with Project Manager, Amaan Dad and director Danyal Visuals, the group produced a gripping documentary and digital campaign that reached audiences beyond Birmingham.

The journey wasn’t just about the final product. It was a transformative process. The group received public-speaking training from leadership coach Kul Muhay, attending a full-day workshop at The Naseby Centre to sharpen their presentation and communication skills. They also took part in go-karting, sports, and team-building sessions—blending development with fun, and earning rewards through our “earn while you learn” structure, while in safe, supervised spaces where they were able to learn, develop and grow.

Through weekly meetings, workshops, and mentoring, the year-long project empowered young people to grow in confidence, take ownership of their voices, and build practical skills for life. It’s not just about highlighting the lack of support—it’s about proving what’s possible when young people are given the space, resources, and belief to lead.

The Where’s Our Support? campaign stands as a powerful example of what youth-led change should look like—and a reminder that real stories, told by those living them, are the ones that matter most.
